Dear Parent/Caregiver,

As part of our commitment to the health and safety of all students at our Woodville, we are reviewing our Sun Protection Policy in alignment with the Department for Education’s 2024 guidelines. This policy aims to ensure that our school community is well-informed and protected from the harmful effects of UV radiation during the school day.

As part of this process, we will be forming a 2024/2025 Uniform/SunSmart committee which will investigate how we will implement the recommendations of this new policy. This committee will have student, staff and parent representatives. If you are interested in being on this committee, please contact Our Wellbeing Senior Leader, Sandro Bracci, on Sandro.bracci704@schools.sa.edu.au.

Our Sun Protection Policy has been developed to encourage the entire school community to use a combination of sun protection measures whenever the UV Index reaches 3 and above, as well as creating a safe school environment that provides adequate shade for students, staff, and the community. We can best achieve this through the education and empowerment of students to take responsibility for their own sun protection.

We are all aware that the balance of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is crucial for health. While too much sun can lead to sunburn, skin damage, and increased skin cancer risk, too little can result in low vitamin D levels, which are essential for healthy bones and muscles. Our policy will encourage sensible sun protection when the UV Index reaches 3 and above, ensuring that our students remain safe while still benefiting from sunlight.

We believe that this Sun Protection Policy will significantly contribute to the wellbeing of our students and the entire school community. We encourage you to discuss sun safety with your children and reinforce these practices at home. Simple actions, such as reminding them to wear their hats and apply sunscreen before heading out, can make a significant difference. Should you have any questions or further information, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe and healthy.
