On Friday 17 November 2023, the Diwali celebrations were held in the staffroom. The staff from Indian backgrounds decorated the room with Rangoli (sand colour), Toran (door garland) and Diya (tea light candles) and arranged Indian treats for the school staff. The staff joined in wishing Happy Diwali to the students and the other staff.
Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is a vibrant and significant Hindu festival, celebrated by millions of people worldwide. ” Known as the festival of Lights”, Diwali signifies the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival typically spans ten days and is marked by the lighting of oil lamps and colourful candles, which illuminate homes, temples and public spaces, creating a mesmerising spectacle. Families come together to exchange gifts, share delicious meals, and offer prayers to deities. Diwali also holds a cultural and religious significance for other communities, including Jains and Sikhs, who celebrate different aspects of the festival. Beyond the illuminations, it symbolises the renewal of life, the strengthening of familial bonds, and a time for reflection and spiritual growth.
