On Wednesday, 17th June, Woodville High School joined communities around Australia to celebrate Refugee Week 2026, themed “A Million Stories”. This year holds special significance, as Australia marks the milestone of welcoming over one million refugees since World War II. At Woodville, the celebrations brought together our diverse school community, reflecting on the incredible journeys and resilient spirits of those who have found a new beginning in Australia.

The event was held in our horticultural garden, which had been transformed to reflect the rich cultures represented in our community. World globe balloons floated above the lush greenery, creating a magical atmosphere that immediately set a joyful and inclusive tone for the festivities. As students and staff arrived, dressed in an array of beautiful cultural outfits, the garden became a vibrant showcase of colour, heritage, and pride. The effort and creativity displayed in the traditional dress highlighted the pride our students and staff have in their backgrounds, and their excitement to share these with each other.

A highlight of the day was the extended BBQ lunch, where delicious scents wafted through the garden, drawing everyone together. The barbecue featured sausages and veggie burgers, with sweets from around the globe adding an extra special touch. For our visiting students from Vietnam, this was their first taste of an authentic Aussie BBQ, an experience met with much enthusiasm and delight. Laughter and conversation flowed easily as staff and students shared food, swapped stories, and forged new connections.

Music from across the world played throughout the garden, further adding to the festive spirit and inviting all to celebrate the different backgrounds that make up our vibrant student body. The tunes provided a dynamic backdrop for the day’s main event: the Cultural Dress Parade. The parade was a true celebration of identity and heritage, allowing participants to model their cultural attire with pride. The warmth and admiration from the audience was palpable. The winners of this year’s parade were truly deserving, with their innovative, creative and authentic costumes receiving widespread acknowledgement from all attendees.

This special occasion at Woodville High School reinforced our commitment to inclusion, respect, and understanding. Refugee Week 2026 was not just an opportunity to celebrate diversity, but also to acknowledge the considerable contributions refugees bring to our school and wider Australian society. The entire day overflowed with a spirit of unity, joy and gratitude, fitting for a milestone as momentous as “A Million Stories”.

The success of this event underscores the value of embracing multiculturalism, and offers a reminder of the unique richness that refugees, and their stories, continue to bring to our lives. We look forward to continuing this tradition of welcome and celebration for many years to come.
