On Monday 4th of July, Woodville High School conducted our own NAIDOC Week March with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students alongside students from our Aboriginal Culture and Language classes. The Aboriginal Culture and language students from year 7, 8 and 9 created posters of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advocates which have embodied the theme for NAIDOC Week 2022 which was “Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!”. We began our march from the Nunga Room at the beginning of lunch and walked together as a group showing off our posters and both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and walked along Woodville Road to the Woodville Town Hall. We were greeted by Member of Parliament Joe Szakacs and who addressed and took questions from our students about NAIDOC Week, his commitment to Reconciliation through the “Uluru Statement from the Heart” and his life growing up in Royal Park. Once we had thanked Joe Szakacs for speaking with us we returned as a group to school to celebrate the March with a sausage sizzle for students as a thank you from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education team.
