The Mosaic Bird Mural Project began in 2023 with Mrs Bajcic’s Year 8 art class, who were exploring slab building techniques through the creation of decorative birds. The beauty and individuality of these pieces quickly inspired a larger vision, transforming a classroom task into a whole school community project to revitalise the cement wall in front of the art studios.

In 2024, a group of Year 7 students took on a leadership role, driving the creative direction of the mural. They conceptualised and designed how the ceramic birds would come together within a cohesive mosaic installation. As part of their learning, they visited the Hindmarsh Greening Shed, where they were mentored in the specialised art of mosaic. A special mention goes to student leader Jasmin, whose dedication and leadership were instrumental at every stage of the project, from initial planning through to making and mosaicing.

The birds have become a powerful symbol within the artwork, representing diversity and resilience within the school community. Nesting forms reflect growth, care and the foundations of learning, while birds in flight symbolise knowledge, progress and aspiration. The final panel, depicting birds soaring into the night sky, connects to the school motto “Reach for the Stars,” capturing a shared vision of hope and possibility.

Over time, the project expanded to include contributions from multiple classes and special interest groups, resulting in several iterations of birds, each unique and reflective of its maker. The surrounding leaves were created over two years during Arts Week, shaped and painted by many hands across the community. Each leaf features the word “peace” in different languages, celebrating cultural diversity and unity. This aspect of the project was also supported through activities connected to the Braiding Project.

The final mosaicing stage was made possible through the incredible mentorship of Hindmarsh Greening’s expert mosaicists, Ivana Kotasek and Cheryl Jaeschke. Ivana, an old scholar of Woodville High School, brought a meaningful sense of legacy to the project. We also extend our sincere thanks to the wider Hindmarsh Greening mosaic team and Kristen Wohlers from MAANZ, whose knowledge, generosity and volunteer support were essential in bringing this ambitious work to completion.

This project has brought together hundreds of students and community members in a shared creative journey. As a timeless art form, the mosaic mural will continue to stand for years to come as a vibrant tribute to collaboration, creativity and community.
