Recently, we gathered as a school community to reaffirm our commitment to peace, both locally and globally.

As part of this reflection, we unveiled our Peace Pole, a globally recognised symbol of unity and hope. Peace Poles stand as silent reminders to think, speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony.

The Peace Pole movement began in 1955, initiated by Japanese pacifist Masahisa Goi, founder of the World Peace Society. Deeply moved by the devastation of World War II, Goi shared a simple yet powerful message: “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” Since then, more than 250,000 Peace Poles have been installed in nearly 200 countries, including Ukraine, Iraq, Israel, Vietnam, New Zealand, and right here in Australia.

You’ll find Peace Poles in iconic locations such as Machu Picchu, the Giza Pyramids, the Pentagon, Adelaide Oval—and even the Henley Community Garden. They’re also proudly displayed in schools across Spain, South Korea, the Philippines, Congo, and many more.

To mark its centenary, Rotary South Australia initiated a statewide project to install Peace Poles in local communities. Woodville High School was proud to take part.

Our Peace Pole features the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in three languages; English, Kaurna, and Vietnamese, honouring our cultural diversity. A fourth side welcomes all with the words: “Welcome to Woodville High School.”

The ceremony was closed with an ancient Chinese proverb by philosopher Laozi, whose words remain profoundly relevant:

“If there is to be peace in the world, there must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations, there must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighbours.
If there is to be peace between neighbours, there must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home, there must be peace in the heart.”

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined our ceremony, and a special acknowledgement to Frank Schirripa for his dedication and perseverance in bringing this project to life.

May peace prevail on earth.
