‘Xin chào’, Hello, ‘Bạn khoẻ không?’, How are you? ‘Tôi là học sinh trường Woodville High School’, I am a student at Woodville High School, ‘Cám ơn’, Thank you, ‘Tạm biệt’, Goodbye, ‘Hẹn gặp lại’, See you later. Those students who have learnt Vietnamese will remember these words for a long time combined with so many memories of fun learning activities in Vietnamese class.

Learning different languages is a gateway to explore the world around you and to understand other cultures. Vietnamese language offered from Year 7-12 at Woodville High School offers the opportunity to learn and to practice  basic greeting words, counting numbers, drawing family tree hierarchies, interesting  Vietnamese hobbies, popular festivals like ‘Tết’, Vietnamese culture, traditions, customs, and sports.

A highlight for everyone, is learning about Vietnamese cuisine, showcasing that food itself is also a universal language to enrich cultural learning. Students have opportunities to learn and make their own popular Vietnamese dishes. ‘Gỏi cuốn’, Cold Roll with fresh ingredients; tasty homemade lemongrass chicken, and ‘Rau thơm’ fresh herbs rolled into ‘Bánh tráng’ Rice paper and dipped into yummy special sauce, or making ‘chả giò’, Spring Roll, ‘Cơm chiên’, Fried rice. Learning to make their own food/dishes will be our students’ best experience in Vietnamese culture, one that combines hands-on activities, a chance to memorise and speak basic Vietnamese words and share an authentic experience with classmates.

There are a number of other extra- curricula activities provided through Vietnamese language to engage learners. This includes learning and performing the Lion dance, and the popular, Diversity dance or traditional/contemporary Vietnamese dance at school Multicultural Assembly organised every year in the school calendar.

Added to the experience in learning Vietnamese at Woodville High School, students go on school excursions. For example, visiting a local Vietnamese restaurant to enjoy ordering and eating the food and partake in the customs which they have spent their year learning about.

Students are invited to have a go, come to learn Vietnamese language to build your learning experience portfolio with a rich Vietnamese language and culture. Will see you in the class. Hẹn gặp lại.
